Square

This obelisk has had a very eventful history. In the beginning it was republican, then it was fascist for fourty years and now it is monarchic.It is known poularly as the pencil because the obelisk looks like one. It is also known as the parrot or the hen, as during francoism it had the imperial eagle on top. The square was designed by the architects Florensa and Vilaseca.

In 1907 the city council decided that in the middle of the junction there would be a monument to Pi i Maragall, the man from Figueres who had been president of the First Spanish Republic.

It is also called Cinc d'Oros. This monument was attacked many times because it was the place where all the demonstrations were.
