Square
PLAZA MEDINACELLI
The Duke of Medinacelli square was urbanized by Francesc Daniel Molina in 1844 on the place where was the Sant Francesc Convent.
It seems that in 1211 San Francisco de Asis was in Barcelona and was staying in the Sant Nicolas' Hospital that was in the same square. King Jaume I commemorating this fact, constructed the Sant Francesc Convent.in 1276. Demolished the convent in 1822 the Duke of Medinaceli vindicated the property of the land and yielded a part to the city council for the construction of the seat of Medinacelli. At the moment in the center of the seat we find the fountain and the monument dedicated to admiral Galcerà Marquet, the one that was advisor of Barcelona in the days of king Alfons the Magnànim. That's the first monument done with iron in Barcelona, made in 1851 by Damià Campeny. Th house of the Counts of Santa Coloma today lodges the dependencies of the Civil Registry. A plate in its facade remembers that there Josep Anselm Clave was born.
