My spot is a sculpture that is located in the Mercat del Ninot, near Hospital
Clinic. The sculpture symbolizes a sailor child, which is a replica of the
original sculpture settled in the Sea Museum of Drassanes. The original
statue used to be placed in the front part of a ship.
This sculpture represents a child that wants to become a learner of the
art of shipping. The child has a nautical degree in one hand and in the
other hand he carries a cap.
I chose this spot because I like its story very much and because when I
was a child I also wanted to be a sailor.
The original one comes from a slave ship that sank near the coast of the
neighbourhood of the Barceloneta.
The captain reached the harbour thanks to this sculpture, but when he went
to a tavern later, he forgot the sculpture there.
The owner of the tavern placed the sculpture in his tavern. Although the
sculpture was first called El Porvenir, its name changed in 1983 and it
became El Ninot.
