"La
Casa de la Papallona" (The butterfly's house) was built in 1912 by
the architect Josep Graner i Prat. It's located in the 20, Llançà
Street. The most popular characteristic of this house is the enormous modernist
butterfly situated on the top of the house. The butterfly is made with little
ceramic pieces of many different shapes and colors: blue, orange, green
and white in its wings. The balconies are made of iron. The modernism started
at the end of the 19th century and received different names depending on
the country: Modernism in Spain, Art Noveau in France, etc.
Its main characteristics are:
1. Fantasy, nature and wavy forms.
2. The return of the inferior arts like the craft.
3. They work with iron balconies and multicolor ceramics.
The butterfly's house is an example of all these characteristics. It's beautiful
and great. Many tourists go to this house to take photos of the butterfly
because it's one of the most important modernist monuments.
