This
square is in the enclosure of the old hospital of Santa Cruz. The square
was built in 1956.
In the square there is a fountain of Sir Alexander Fleming created by José
Manuel Benedicto García.
Doctor Fleming was born in Scotland in 1881. He was a famous doctor bacteriologist
and he won in 1945 the Nobel prize of Medicine for discovering penicillin.
One day Fleming came to Barcelona
and the people who were selling flowers in the Rambles gave flowers to
him and his wife. For that reason when Fleming was dying it was wanted
that its monument did not move away from the Rambles so that the people
who sell flowers could go to visit constantly.
Once s year, in the occasion of the celebration of Santa Cruz, people
gather themselves at the foot of the fountain where flowers are given
and songs are sung.
