| The
project for a monumental fountain in Plaça Espanya was commissioned
to the architect Josep M. Jujol when the last preparations for the inauguration
of the International Exposition were being done. Thus, when in 1929 the
Exposition was opened to the public, the fountain was still being built.
The fountain symbolize the
three seas which bathe the Iberian Peninsula and the three hydrographical
basins which flow into them. The sculptural groups, six meters high, are
done in bronze and are the work of sculptor Miquel Blay.
The work rises in the center
of the square, over a small hill were the cross that signaled the end
of the road to Madrid used to stand, called Creu Coberta, which gave origin
to the name of the main street in the Sants quarter that stems from the
square.
I like this fountain very much
because almost every day I see this monument when I am in the bus.
