Pau Gil I Serra who lived in Paris left in his will 4 million pesetas
to build a model hospital in Barcelona which has to be called as him.
In 1898 the land was bought and chose Domènech i Montaner as the
architect because he was very famous at that time and very prestigious.
The first stone was laid in 1902 and the works continued until they run
out of money. Thanks to the donations from the people from Barcelona and
to the Town Hall, the work continued and Domènech i Roure (Lluis's
son) continued the building. Pau Gargallo directed almost all the sculpture
work.
