Façade

Name of house: Casa Casimir Clapés
Address: Diputació, 246
Architect: Joaquim Bassegoda i Amigó
Building date: 1907

It's a modernist building of 1907. It is not a very big building but it has a great artistic quality. Its owner wanted to represent the wealthy social class. It was like a competition among owners because they all wanted to have the most expensive and beautiful house in Barcelona. The architects were free to make their projects and they could be very creative.
The whole building is very elegant, rich and very impressive. There are two bay balconies in the middle of the façade which is very rich in motifs and decoration. The top of the balconies has a motif related to textile work. It represents two children and a young lady who are chained to a telar because the work in hours were from twelve to fourteen hours a day. That shows that people didn't mind making workers work a lot. The two balconies at the top want to make the house look three dimensional. The roof is very impressive and shows the image of a lady. The front door is worth seeing it. Now that Barcelona is "getting beautiful" ( posa't guapa) , I wish I could have an apartment there.
